The film A Different Man, a winner at the Golden Globes and several film festivals, has established itself as one of the standout movies of 2024. Additionally, the film is nominated for the 2025 Oscars in the Makeup and Hairstyling category.

Produced by A24, the movie follows a man with facial disfigurement who, despite undergoing surgery to change his face, struggles to become the person he hoped to be. Classified as a psychological drama and thriller, it serves as a moral fable about the significance of physical appearance.

However, one aspect that has particularly caught the audience’s attention is the real-life condition of the film’s lead, Adam Pearson.

What Is Neurofibromatosis?

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to develop in the nervous system, affecting the skin, bones, and, in some cases, vision.

These tumors grow on nerve cells and can lead to bone deformities, skin changes, and growth problems.

There are three types of neurofibromatosis, with NF1 (Type 1) being the most common—the type that Adam Pearson has. In most cases, the condition is hereditary, but it can also occur due to spontaneous genetic mutations, which is how Pearson developed it.

Neurofibromatosis affects approximately 1 in 2,500 people and is typically diagnosed in childhood.

Adam Pearson’s Before and After

For years, the actor has used his platform to share his story, aiming to challenge prejudice, stares, and discrimination faced by people with this condition.

He has openly spoken about being a victim of bullying throughout his school years. As a result, he has participated in awareness programs to combat school bullying.

Additionally, his success as an actor has given him a new platform to fight against the stigma surrounding facial disfigurement.

However, social media has highlighted how much work still needs to be done. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented after seeing that singer Camila Cabello was seated next to Pearson at an event:

«This is honestly terrifying. I wouldn’t go to the event if I were Camila.»

Adam Pearson responded with wit:

«Luckily for everyone, you’re not Camila, and more importantly, you weren’t invited.»
