The Brazilian entertainment world is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars. Preta Gil, acclaimed singer, actress, and daughter of legendary musician Gilberto Gil, has died at the age of 50. She passed away on July 20, 2025, in New York City after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Preta had been hospitalized in the United States since May, seeking advanced treatment options following a resurgence of her illness. Diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2023, she underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. For a time, there was hope—her condition appeared to improve—but the disease returned aggressively in mid-2024, prompting her move abroad for further care.

Known for her fierce talent and even fiercer spirit, Preta Gil was a cultural icon in Brazil. Her debut album, Prêt-à-Porter (2003), marked the beginning of a dynamic musical career that embraced genre-blending sounds and delivered powerful messages of empowerment and inclusivity. She also made her mark on Brazilian television as an actress and presenter, and in 2017, she co-founded Mynd, a talent agency dedicated to representing artists and digital creators.

Her passing was announced by her father, Gilberto Gil, in a heartfelt message shared on social media. “With sadness, we inform you of the passing of Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira in New York,” the statement read. “We are currently arranging for her repatriation to Brazil. We ask for understanding from friends, fans, and members of the media as we go through this difficult time as a family. Details about farewells will be shared as soon as possible.”

Tributes have poured in from across Brazil, including from major football clubs such as Flamengo—Preta’s favorite—as well as Bahia, Botafogo, and Palmeiras. All paid homage to her social activism, artistic legacy, and indomitable energy.

Preta Gil’s voice, laughter, and unwavering fight for justice and diversity will continue to echo in Brazil and beyond. Her memory lives on not just through her music, but through the countless lives she touched with her strength and authenticity.
