Michael Eugene Archer, globally known as music icon D’Angelo, passed away at the age of 51 on October 14, 2025. The artist died in New York City from pancreatic cancer after a prolonged period of hospitalization.

“He was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months,” a source close to the singer told People.

D’Angelo will be remembered as one of the great legends of music. Personally, however, he faced challenging periods, including struggles with addiction and other hardships. His passing has sent shockwaves through the music world, as D’Angelo was not only an exceptional performer but also a pivotal figure in the history of R&B and neo-soul.

A Timeless Icon Through Triumphs and Struggles

D’Angelo first gained attention in 1994 by co-writing and co-producing U Will Know for Black Men United, paving the way for his platinum-selling debut Brown Sugar (1995), which helped define the neo-soul movement. He collaborated with artists like Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Angie Stone, and his second album Voodoo (2000) topped the charts and earned him a Grammy.

Despite his success, he struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and withdrew from the public eye for over a decade, affecting his health and output.

He made a celebrated return in 2014 with Black Messiah, which won a Grammy and solidified his legacy as a socially conscious and influential artist. Before his death, he had been working on a fourth album with Raphael Saadiq, expected to be released posthumously.

D’Angelo was deeply affected by the tragic death of his ex, Angie Stone, in a car crash earlier this year. Although the couple had moved on romantically, the loss of someone so significant in his life was described as “devastating,” leaving him “extremely overwhelmed” and unable to attend her funeral.

The two shared a lasting bond not only as former partners but also as collaborators, having worked together on tours and songwriting, and they had a son together, Michael Jr., born in 1998.

Artists Bid Farewell to D’Angelo

D’Angelo will be remembered not only for his unique voice and ability to redefine R&B and neo-soul but also for his cultural impact, artistic authenticity, and influence on multiple generations of musicians. Many artists have paid tribute to the soul legend, including Lauryn Hill, Beyonce, Drake, Rosalía, Jennifer Hudson, Doja Cat, Tyler, the Creator, and many more.

Causes and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer

After D’Angelo’s passing, many people have started searching for the causes and symptoms of pancreatic cancer. It occurs when cells in the pancreas grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

The most common type is ductal adenocarcinoma, which starts in the ducts that carry digestive enzymes. It is often diagnosed late because early stages usually have no symptoms.

Common symptoms include abdominal pain that spreads to the back, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), changes in urine or stool color, fatigue, and new problems controlling blood sugar. Swelling or pain in the arms or legs may also appear due to blood clots. Early medical consultation is crucial if any of these signs occur.

While the exact cause is unknown, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of pancreatic cancer. These include smoking, obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, family history of the disease, and inherited genetic mutations. People at high risk may benefit from screening tests like MRI scans or ultrasounds. Healthy habits such as avoiding tobacco, maintaining a proper weight, and managing diabetes can help reduce risk.
