If you’ve ever watched Jimmy Kimmel Live!, you know Cleto Escobedo III, the iconic bandleader and saxophonist of the show’s in-house group, Cleto and the Cletones. Kimmel himself announced on November 11 that the musician had passed away at the age of 59.
“Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician and man, my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III,” Kimmel wrote. “To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement.”
Kimmel shared the heartbreaking news visibly emotional.
“Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true,” he added. “Cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children and parents in your prayers.”

Kimmel and Escobedo were truly inseparable. In fact, when Kimmel landed his late-night show in 2003, he made sure Escobedo would be part of the project as well.
When a sudden death like this happens, everyone looks for answers — but it’s not that simple. The cause of Cleto Escobedo’s death has not been publicly revealed.
Variety confirmed that his personal condition was the reason Jimmy Kimmel Live! was canceled the Thursday before his passing.
In addition to his key role on Kimmel’s show, Escobedo also toured with several major artists, including Marc Anthony, Paula Abdul, and Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Escobedo is survived by his parents, his wife, and his two children.
