As Vogue has announced, this year’s theme is Tailored For You, inspired by ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’ According to Vogue, the focus is on exploring the role of tailored fashion in shaping Black identities. It highlights the emergence, significance, and influence of Black dandyism.

What Does This Theme Mean?

This year, the MET Gala is putting the spotlight on Black influence in fashion, focusing on the elegant style of Black dandies, who have shaped their own identity in the United States from the 18th century to today.

The theme takes inspiration from an exhibition currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which is based on the book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibition explores how clothing has played a key role in shaping Black identity throughout history. Showing how Black men who were passionate about fashion—known as dandies—began expressing themselves through style as early as the 18th century.

As the exhibition describes: “Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities.”
