Ana Escobar Rivas The engagement between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has quickly become one of the most talked-about stories of 2025—even though it happened toward the end of the year. Since the news broke in late August, nearly every outlet has covered the couple’s future wedding plans.

While it’s still early and details about the ceremony remain unknown, some experts suggest that the singer and the NFL star might delay the wedding by up to a year. The reason? A detail that’s increasingly common among high-profile couples: a prenuptial agreement.

Prenups today go far beyond dividing money. As family law attorney Launi Sheldon explains, the contract between Taylor and Travis—whose net worths are estimated at $1.6 billion and $90 million, respectively—would aim for clarity. “For high-profile figures, prenups help protect creative work, personal reputation, and investments.”

The legal advisor notes that if the couple decides on a prenuptial agreement, *“the complexity of their combined assets could extend negotiations for more than a year, potentially delaying the long-awaited wedding”*. Similar to what happened with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

What Could This Prenup Cover?

Intellectual Property and Music

The agreement would likely ensure that Swift keeps full ownership of her repertoire and recordings, guaranteeing that all income from sales, licensing, and streaming remains exclusively hers in the event of a separation. Her music catalog alone is estimated to be worth around $400 million.

Some prenups include clauses stating that all songwriting royalties, publishing income, and performance rights earned before and during the marriage remain exclusively hers. They can also cover confidentiality agreements that prevent a spouse from disclosing details about unreleased music, lyrics inspired by the relationship, or future projects.

Personal Reputation and Social Media

Sheldon, an associate at the divorce app SplitUp, explains that it’s increasingly common for prenups to include clauses around social media and confidentiality. These terms can spell out what kind of content may be shared during the marriage and after a potential breakup.

A well-known example is the agreement between Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez, which banned the public release of photos or videos from their marriage and restricted participation in interviews or projects about the relationship without mutual consent.

Clauses like these can even shape an artist’s creative output. Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine touched on her divorce, but she presented it as a “concept album,” blending fact and fiction to maintain her privacy.

For Swift and Kelce, similar provisions could protect both their privacy and their reputations, while also preventing the commercial exploitation of their relationship. Something especially relevant given Swift’s constant media spotlight.

Common Clauses in Celebrity Prenups

  • Infidelity, substance abuse, and personal conduct
  • Pets and personal belongings
  • Travel expectations
  • Endorsement and sponsorship deals
  • Parenting and custody agreements
  • Divorce timelines or resolution clauses

There are well-known precedents. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, for example, included sobriety clauses in their agreement, while Beyoncé and Jay-Z set financial incentives tied to the length of their marriage and child-rearing.

Experts even suggest that the engagement ring Travis Kelce gave Taylor Swift could be addressed in the prenup, with specific terms on whether it should be returned or kept if the wedding is called off.

Of course, not every celebrity couple goes this route. According to legal sources, Justin and Hailey Bieber never signed a prenup to separate assets in case of divorce.

Meanwhile, TMZ reported that Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian were working on an agreement. However, they married before finalizing it, and it’s unclear if they later signed a postnup. For Swift and Kelce, only time will tell how the matter is resolved.
