When it comes to awards season, we often think about the glitz and glamour of ceremonies like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. But tucked right into that same season is a much cheekier event: the Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies. Instead of celebrating the best in film, the Razzies shine a spotlight on the worst cinema has to offer.

The Razzies were created in 1981 by John J.B. Wilson and Mo Murphy as a lighthearted way to poke fun at Hollywood’s missteps. What started as a small gathering in Wilson’s living room has since grown into a globally recognized event. Held annually, usually the night before the Oscars, the Razzies call out questionable creative decisions, bad performances, and movies that just didn’t land with audiences or critics.

The winners are awarded a trophy that’s as quirky as the ceremony itself: a plastic raspberry spray-painted gold and mounted on a cheap base. Despite being a joke, the Razzies have become a big part of Hollywood culture. However, the awards aren’t without controversy, as some believe they are unnecessarily harsh or unfairly single out certain actors or films.
