Owen Cooper, Netflix’s New Breakout Star: From Unknown to Rising Talent

Much of the buzz around the series comes from its cast

It’s hard not to have heard of Adolescence, the Netflix series that’s taken the platform by storm since its premiere on March 13. In just four days, the show racked up over 25 million viewers worldwide, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about series of the year.

While its gripping storyline and strong production have certainly helped, much of the buzz around Adolescence comes from its cast—especially the standout performance of Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate.

What makes Cooper’s performance even more impressive is that Adolescence marks his first-ever acting role. Not much is known about his personal life: he was born in Warrington, his mother works as a caregiver, and his father is in tech. The youngest of three siblings, Owen was originally passionate about football—until he began taking weekly acting classes in Manchester.

Despite having no prior experience in film or TV, he landed the lead role at just 14 years old. His debut has been so well received that many already see him as one of the most promising young actors in British cinema.

On social media, Owen Cooper keeps things low-key. Even though he’s gained over 24,000 followers, he’s only posted six times, all related to the series. So far, no other official accounts are known.

Following the success of Adolescence, new opportunities came quickly. His next role is already confirmed: he’ll be playing Heathcliff in a new film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, best known for Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

The film is set to premiere on February 13, 2026, and will also star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi—a huge step forward for Owen, putting him in the spotlight alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

From unknown newcomer to sharing the screen with top-tier talent, Owen Cooper’s career is only just beginning—but it’s already clear he’s on track to become one of the brightest stars of his generation.
