Miley Cyrus is currently on the promotional tour for Something Beautiful, her latest studio album released on June 30 across all platforms. Along the way, she’s been giving interviews and sharing new insights about her career. The latest reveal? That none other than Selena Gomez took a role that was originally hers: Mavis in Hotel Transylvania, the DreamWorks animated saga with four films—the last of which was released in 2022.
This week, Miley appeared on the podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, where she reflected on different moments in her life. During the interview, she revealed that back in 2012, she had been hired to voice Mavis, the main character in Hotel Transylvania, a film centered around a family of monsters. The franchise eventually produced four movies (so far).
Miley shared that, although she had originally been cast as the lead voice, she was eventually replaced by Selena Gomez. Laughing, she recalled the moment—and even threw in a reference to the fact that both of them had dated Nick Jonas:
“It’s kind of a running joke now. I gave her a boyfriend and a penis cake for her birthday. I was supposed to be the lead in Hotel Transylvania, I got fired, and they gave it to her,” Cyrus revealed.
Despite that moment, Miley and Selena are now on good terms. They’ve been seen exchanging greetings on red carpets over the years. In the end, both went through similar journeys: former Disney girls who grew up and became pop stars.
Now, more than a decade since the release of the first Hotel Transylvania film, Miley is able to laugh about the whole situation.
One bit of news from the Something Beautiful promo tour has thrilled longtime fans—especially those who grew up in the early 2000s: Miley Cyrus is now allowed to perform Hannah Montana songs in her concerts.
The artist revealed that, thanks to her status as a Disney Legend (she’s the youngest person ever to receive the title), she now has the rights to sing songs from the iconic character. One more reason to catch her live at some point in our lives.
