Big news from the Tomb Raider universe. Sophie Turner, best known for playing Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, has officially been cast as Lara Croft in Amazon’s upcoming live‑action Tomb Raider series. The show is being created and led by Fleabag alum Phoebe Waller‑Bridge. Plus it’s based on the legendary video game series and backed by Crystal Dynamics, the game’s original developer.

Turner is excited—and honestly, a great pick. She’s aware of the weight of following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, both of whom previously played the role on the big screen. Still, she’s ready to bring her energy, humor, and bravery to the character.

For her part, Waller‑Bridge said: “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving… Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara.” According to Entertainment Weekly, production is set to begin on January 19, 2026—though we don’t yet have a release date

The Legacy of Lara Croft

Lara Croft first appeared in 1996 as a video game character, and quickly became one of gaming’s most iconic heroes—BAFTA even named her the most iconic video game character ever in a poll, beating out Mario and Sonic.

In the films, Angelina Jolie’s version in 2001 made her a global superstar, and Alicia Vikander revived the role in the 2018 reboot, grossing hundreds of millions globally.

This Amazon series promises a fresh angle. Under Waller‑Bridge’s creative direction, the tone is likely to be bolder, funnier, and more grounded. Expect a Lara who’s adventurous, smart, and unfiltered—but still a badass explorer.
