Back in 2014, Taylor Swift and Matty Healy—frontman of The 1975—met backstage at one of his shows. For years, rumors swirled about a possible relationship, and those whispers came back in full force in 2023 after Swift’s breakup with Joe Alwyn. According to Harper’s Bazaar, Swift was seen in the crowd at Healy’s concert in London in January 2023.
A few months later, Healy was spotted in Nashville, attending one of Swift’s Eras Tour shows. However, the relationship was short-lived, and the two reportedly split after just a few months.
Now, British actress and TV personality Denise Welch, who is also Matty Healy ’s mother, has opened up about the past romance between her son and Taylor Swift. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Welch didn’t hold back when asked about Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which many fans believe was inspired by her brief fling with Healy.

“Not being her mother-in-law is a role I’m glad that I lost,” she said with a touch of irony. While she made it clear she has nothing against Taylor, she admitted the situation had been “tricky.”
Welch also took a subtle swipe at Swift’s songwriting habits: “Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything and then she writes a whole album about it.” Despite the underlying tension, she confirmed that her son has moved on and is now happily engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel.

The actress had made similar remarks before on Loose Women, the British talk show where she regularly appears as a co-host. At the time, she joked that she hadn’t listened to the album and wished Swift all the best.
Matty Healy, for his part, has also downplayed the subject. However, during his recent set at Glastonbury, he made a comment that many took as a subtle jab at Swift and her latest album. “This moment makes me realize I’m probably the best songwriter of my generation—the best, how should I say it? A poet. A poet, ladies and gentlemen—that’s what I am,” he said on stage.
