Legendary drummer Matt Cameron has officially announced he’s stepping away from Pearl Jam. The news marks the end of an era for the iconic Seattle band, but Cameron’s heartfelt statement suggests this is a positive and intentional move.
Cameron joined Pearl Jam during their Yield tour in 1998 and has played on every studio album since Binaural (2000). Before that, he was the powerhouse drummer for Soundgarden and a member of Temple of the Dog. He’s also one of the rare musicians inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—first with Pearl Jam in 2017, and then with Soundgarden in 2025.
In his July 7, 2025 statement, Cameron wrote: “After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam […] I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey.” He expressed deep gratitude to his bandmates—Vedder, McCready, Ament, and Gossard—along with the crew, staff, and fans around the world.
Messages from Matt and the band:

The band responded warmly, calling him a “singular and true powerhouse of a musician” and “one of our first musical heroes.” They reflected on his transformative role since 1998, described his chapter with Pearl Jam as “deeply important,” and said he’ll always remain “a friend in art and music.”
Neither Cameron nor the band has revealed the exact reason for his departure—he didn’t cite health issues or retirement. Pearl Jam is reportedly off the road for the rest of 2025, giving them time to find a new drummer. However, Cameron did hint at what’s next, writing “more to follow,” suggesting he’s far from done musically.
Matt Cameron’s exit closes a 27-year chapter in Pearl Jam’s history—one marked by creative milestones and deep artistic camaraderie. While no official reason was given, his statement felt thoughtful and forward-looking, not abrupt or contentious.
Matt Cameron is a legend . Mild mannered until he was behind his drums . Where were those backing vocals coming from ? The guy banging on the drums ! I always loved being in the sweet spot next to his kit . Hiding between Simon and Neil . I’m really gonna miss him . I wish him… pic.twitter.com/3Ap8RjVAJX
