Without any prior announcement, Marvel Studios surprised fans by live-streaming a video revealing the cast of its next big event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Avengers: Doomsday.

The stream, which showed a lineup of director’s chairs labeled with each actor’s name, quickly drew thousands of viewers eager to find out who will star in the Russo brothers’ next Marvel project—their first since Avengers: Endgame. And yes, there were definitely some surprises.

Some names were expected, like Chris Hemsworth, whose return as the God of Thunder came as no shock. But others were more unexpected—actors many thought wouldn’t return to the franchise, especially not for another Avengers film.

With a steady pace and a few fun details—like Paul Rudd’s noticeably smaller chair as a nod to his character’s size—the video revealed the full cast. And there were definitely a few names no one saw coming.

All the Actors Joining Avengers: Doomsday

  • Chris Hemsworth – The Australian star returns as Thor, who seems stronger than ever after the events of Thor: Love & Thunder.
  • Vanessa Kirby – The new Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four, will make her debut as an Avenger.
  • Anthony Mackie – Now officially Captain America, formerly known as Falcon, he’s already shown what he’s capable of in Brave New World. That film even hints he might take on the role of team leader.
  • Sebastian Stan – The Winter Soldier is back, and he’s bringing the Thunderbolts with him. We’ll likely learn more about their role once their movie hits theaters.
  • Letitia Wright – As the new Black Panther, Shuri will build on what we saw in Wakanda Forever as she faces off against Victor Von Doom.
  • Paul Rudd – Ant-Man, one of the key players in recent Avengers victories, is also set to be part of the action in Doomsday.
  • Wyatt Russell – U.S. Agent, introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, returns to fight alongside the rest of the team.
  • Tenoch Huerta Mejía – It seems Namor has completed his redemption arc and is now joining the heroes’ side, after going head-to-head with Wakanda in Wakanda Forever.
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach – The Thing, another member of the Fantastic Four, is confirmed to appear in this major crossover event.
  • Simu Liu – Shang-Chi will officially join the Avengers, something that was teased at the end of The Legend of the Ten Rings and now becomes a reality in Doomsday.
  • Florence Pugh – Yelena, the new Black Widow, is also switching sides as the Thunderbolts team up with the Avengers.
  • Kelsey Grammer – One of the biggest surprises: the iconic actor is expected to return as Beast from the original X-Men films, as he briefly did in The Marvels.
  • Lewis Pullman – His mysterious role in Thunderbolts (not so mysterious to longtime fans) continues, now as part of the Avengers lineup.
  • Danny Ramirez – The new Falcon earned his place on the team in Brave New World, and now he joins Marvel’s next-generation heroes.
  • Joseph Quinn – The new Human Torch from the upcoming Fantastic Four movie will also be part of the Doomsday cast.
  • David Harbour – Red Guardian, also from the Thunderbolts, will be one of the links between Marvel’s newest hero teams in this big ensemble.
  • Winston Duke – M’Baku returns from Wakanda to join the fight. This won’t be his first time alongside the Avengers—he previously appeared in Infinity War and Endgame.
  • Hannah John-Kamen – Ghost, the main villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp, returns to the Marvel universe in a big way, now as a Thunderbolt fighting with the Avengers.
  • Tom Hiddleston – Loki is back. After saving the multiverse, the God of Mischief is once again a key figure in this next chapter. Fans are already wondering what his reunion with Thor will be like after everything that’s happened.
  • Patrick Stewart – Professor X makes his return after his praised cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Will he once again be part of the Illuminati?
  • Ian McKellen – Another huge surprise: Magneto is back. But the big question is—will he be an ally or an enemy?
  • Alan Cumming – Though not officially confirmed, all signs point to the return of Nightcrawler, continuing Marvel’s embrace of the early 2000s X-Men cast.
  • Rebecca Romijn – Mystique, also from the original X-Men films, joins the Avengers in this new era of Marvel heroes.
  • James Marsden – Cyclops, one of the natural leaders of the X-Men, is also set to return for Doomsday as part of the classic mutant team.
  • Channing Tatum – Gambit finally returns. After his surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, he’ll officially step into the role he’s long fought to bring to life.
  • Pedro Pascal – As the new Reed Richards, he leads the Fantastic Four into this major crossover alongside his full team.
  • Robert Downey Jr. – The first actor confirmed for Doomsday also delivers the biggest twist: this time, he’s not Iron Man, but the villainous Doctor Doom.

Who’s Missing from the Avengers: Doomsday Cast?

While fans were excited—and surprised—to see so many familiar faces from the 2000s X-Men films returning for Marvel’s next big event, the casting announcement also left people wondering: Where are some of the MCU’s most iconic heroes?

The reveal came with some noticeable absences, including Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Also missing were a few newer characters in the MCU, like She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel, among others.

Fans also pointed out the absence of Daredevil, Deadpool, and several other heroes. So the big question is: Are these characters actually in Doomsday, and Marvel is just keeping them under wraps? Similar to the surprises pulled off in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Or could Marvel be holding back even more major appearances for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars?

What we do know is that Doomsday is already in production, so the wait is getting shorter. And soon enough, the Marvel Universe will be shaken up once again.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1, 2026.
