Lady Gaga has made a name for herself in both the music world and the film industry with her unique personality and distinctive way of making music. Because of this, her eighth studio album, Mayhem, was highly anticipated. It was released on March 7, 2025, and covers a variety of genres, including dance pop, industrial, EDM, synth pop, house, and soft rock.

Mayhem came about during a time of self-reflection and personal challenges that Gaga went through between 2022 and 2024. She described the creative process as a ‘series of gothic dreams’ that dive into themes of love, chaos, and reconciliation. Songs like ‘Disease’ and ‘Abracadabra’ show her ability to mix modern sounds with influences from her past work. One of the standout tracks is «Die with a Smile,» a collaboration with Bruno Mars that showcases her vocal range and power.

Mayhem Reception

Despite the high expectations, Mayhem has received mixed reviews from critics. Some people praise its variety and Gaga’s ability to reinvent herself, while others feel that the album doesn’t quite reach the depth of her previous work. For example, our colleagues at LOS40 Spain mention that while it’s a solid pop album, it gets a bit lost in the high expectations of her fans.

The author concludes: “Saying that Mayhem disappointed me would be unfair and completely wrong for Lady Gaga […] My issue has more to do with expectations. I was hoping for a natural follow-up to Born This Way. Abracadabra—the best track on the album—seemed to point in that direction, but it didn’t turn out that way. Mayhem isn’t exactly what I was hoping for, but it’s still a well-produced album with a perfect Gaga. When comparing, I’d go with her three iconic albums: The Fame, The Fame Monster, and Born This Way. And, if I’m being honest, Chromatica is far superior to Mayhem.”

Mayhem marks a time of exploration and self-expression for Lady Gaga, where she blends her love for music with a wide range of influences and styles. While opinions on the album may differ, it’s clear that Gaga continues to challenge the norms and remains a major figure in the music industry.
