Kate Cassidy, the girlfriend of the late singer Liam Payne, has broken her silence in an emotional interview with The Sun, where she shared details about the former One Direction member’s final days and the circumstances that led her to leave Argentina shortly before his tragic death.
Cassidy, 25, explained that she decided to return to Florida to take care of Nala, the dog she shared with Payne, while he remained in Buenos Aires. She clarified that her departure was not an act of abandonment but a mutual decision based on the well-being of their pet. «I wish I had stayed, but I never imagined what would happen,» she said through tears.
“It was a tragic accident and no, I never did think (he might die young). But, you know, we did have our own separate lives — this wasn’t the first time we have travelled separately.
“When we’re away from each other, we’re not really the clingiest when it comes to messaging . . . it wasn’t super-constant,» she added.
“I just never thought this would have happened, that it would turn out the way it did.”
The influencer described her relationship with Payne as a «fairy tale» and remembered him as her «soulmate.» She shared that they had plans to marry and start a family and that her love for him had begun when she was just 10 years old, with One Direction posters in her room.
«From the moment I met Liam, I genuinely believed we were soulmates; he was the most humble, charming, normal person you could ever hope to come across, and genuinely one of the best people I’ve ever met in my life.»

Cassidy also recounted the devastating moment she learned of Payne’s death. She was at her home in Florida when she received a call from a mutual friend informing her of the tragic event. «I couldn’t believe it; I was in shock,» she recalled.
Regarding the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death, Cassidy stated that she believes it was an accident and not an intentional act. Five people, including the hotel manager and a receptionist at the hotel where the incident occurred, have been charged in connection with his passing.

Kate stated: “It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here. “I’m trying to be the best I can be, but I feel like my life has changed so much. I think about Liam every second of every day.
Despite the criticism and accusations she has faced on social media, Cassidy emphasized that she always supported Payne in his battles with mental health and addiction and that her love for him was unconditional. «Liam, my angel. I want you to know that I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will love you for the rest of my life,» she concluded in her emotional statement.
Following the tragic death of Liam Payne in October 2024, Argentine authorities have made progress in the judicial process to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
Five people have been charged in connection with his passing. Among them, the manager of the Casa Sur hotel, the head receptionist, and Payne’s representative face charges of involuntary manslaughter, accused of negligence for failing to provide necessary assistance to Payne in his vulnerable state. Additionally, a hotel employee and a waiter have been charged with drug distribution, accused of supplying cocaine to the artist on multiple occasions.
Judge Laura Bruniard, who is handling the case, determined that Payne, in an evident state of intoxication, mistook his hotel room balcony for an exit, which led to his fatal fall. The possibility of suicide has been ruled out, concluding that the singer was not aware of his actions at the time of the incident.
Regarding those accused of drug distribution, preventive detention has been ordered due to the severity of the charges, which carry sentences ranging from 4 to 15 years in prison. Meanwhile, those charged with involuntary manslaughter could face prison sentences of 1 to 5 years. The legal process remains ongoing, with new hearings and additional evidence expected to be presented to determine final responsibilities in this case, which has shocked the music world.
