Karol G just dropped her fifth studio album, Tropicoqueta, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the summer. With tracks like ‘Verano Rosa’ (featuring Feid), which fans had been eagerly waiting for, and ‘Papasito,’ her playful song in English, there’s plenty to talk about.

But one track in particular, ‘Ivonny Bonita,’ has sparked curiosity even before the album was out. Karol had teased it in an Instagram post, where she appeared wearing underwear with “Ivonny Bonita” embroidered on it. Naturally, fans started wondering—what does it mean?

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, La Bichota opened up about the story behind the song and what inspired this alter ego. “I feel like I’ve been through a lot in my life—especially over the past three or four years. It’s been the hardest chapter I’ve lived through,” she said.

She explained that she’s someone who feels things deeply. “I’m very sensitive and intense. So when something—or someone—hurts me, I don’t just feel it, I multiply it.”

The Importance of ‘Ivonny Bonita’

That’s where Ivonny Bonita comes in. “It’s crazy because I created this alter ego to help me get through it all. I was disappointed in myself for letting things hit me so hard, for sinking so deep that I honestly thought I wouldn’t come back from it.” That’s when the name Ivonny came to her.

Karol G was on a boat with friends when a song by Wizkid came on, and in it, he said: “Ivonny, my baby.” The moment she heard it, she got hooked on the name. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, Ivonny—what a wild name.’ If someone ever called me and said, ‘Hey, your boyfriend’s here with some girl named Ivonny,’ I’d lose it. You could say Daniela, Camila, whatever… but Ivonny? That just sounds intense, I don’t know why.”

Looking back, Karol says she’s proud of everything that led her to create Ivonny: “Now I feel grateful for everything I went through. I truly believe I’ve grown—not just for myself, but for others too. Still, those were really tough moments, and I never gave myself credit for getting through them, you know? That’s why this song, Ivonny, is a tribute to that part of me—the girl who got me here. And she’s still me. I think we all have an Ivonny inside of us, the part that pushes us through the hardest moments and into the unknown.”
