Colombia and the television world are grieving the loss of one of their greats: Kepa Amuchástegui. He who brought the beloved Don Roberto Mendoza to life in the iconic telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, passed away on May 27 at the age of 83, after a long battle with bladder cancer.

With his passing, we lose not just a talented actor, but also a deep voice, a wise presence, and a true gentleman of the arts. Kepa passed away at 11:11 p.m., surrounded by his family, just as he had wished. His loved ones shared the news with a simple yet touching message: “He left us with a slow and peaceful breath.”

Fans are mourning, but so are his colleagues and friends. Several cast members from “Yo Soy Betty, La Fea” took to social media to honor him. Ana María Orozco, who played Betty, wrote: “Dearest and unforgettable Kepa, we’ll miss you so much.”

Natalia Ramírez, who played his daughter-in-law on the show, shared an emotional tribute: “So many plans, so many conversations left to have. Thank you for everything, Kepa.” Jorge Enrique Abello, who played his on-screen son, also wrote from the heart: “Everything I learned from you, I carry with me.”

A Fighter to the End

In late April, Kepa openly shared his diagnosis with the public. With calm and courage, he explained that he had a malignant tumor in his bladder that had already spread and couldn’t be treated with chemotherapy. Instead, he chose to begin immunotherapy, knowing it wouldn’t be easy. “That’s where I’m at,” he said in his familiar, steady tone—reminding us that grace and dignity are also part of the art of living… and saying goodbye.

When he was no longer able to keep working, Kepa turned to social media to ask for support, hoping to monetize his content. He did so without shame, and with dignity—and many people responded.

More Than Just “Don Roberto”

Kepa Amuchástegui was more than a beloved actor—he was a cornerstone of Colombian television and theater. Born in Bogotá on December 9, 1941, to Basque immigrant parents, he originally studied architecture, but life led him to the stage—and that’s where he found his true calling.

His career spanned over 40 TV productions, including standout roles such as the President of Colombia in La Bruja. Alberto Silva in La Ley del Corazón, and Bartolomé de las Casas in La Reina de Indias y el Conquistador. He returned as Don Roberto in Betty, La Fea: La Historia Continúa, bringing the same heart and charm that made the character unforgettable.

Beyond acting, Kepa was also a writer, stage director, and mentor to many generations of actors. Among his meaningful projects were Punto de Giro, Amar Para Vivir, and Aprendí a Quererme. His impact went far beyond the screen.
