You’ve probably already seen it—the photo of Dua Lipa with Kosovo’s President, Vjosa Osmani—where the singer was officially granted Kosovar citizenship. This marks her third nationality.

The ceremony took place on Friday, August 1, in the capital, and felt more like a national celebration than a formal event. She was welcomed by a children’s choir performing a special rendition of ‘Levitating’.

President Osmani later paid tribute to Lipa on social media, calling her “one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country’s history.” The honor reflects Lipa’s strong ties to Kosovo, especially through her role in bringing the Sunny Hill Festival to the country.

Still, the news has sparked a wave of curiosity among fans and the public alike: How did Lipa qualify for Kosovar citizenship? What are her other nationalities—and how did she manage to hold three?

Dua Lipa’s Nationalities

To understand how Dua Lipa ended up with three nationalities, we have to go back to her beginnings. She was born on August 22, 1995, in London, after her parents left Kosovo in 1992 during the growing tensions that would eventually lead to the 1998–1999 war.

Her parents, both Albanian-Kosovar, returned to their homeland after Kosovo declared independence in 2008, taking Dua with them. But by the time she was 16, Lipa moved back to the UK to chase the music career that would turn her into a global pop icon.

Her multiple citizenships aren’t just the result of where she’s lived. In 2022, Albanian President Bajram Begaj granted her Albanian nationality, recognizing her “global career and involvement in social causes.” And now, given the close cultural ties between Albania and Kosovo, she has been officially granted Kosovar citizenship by President Vjosa Osmani.

A Celebration on Stage

Dua Lipa returned to the city of Pristina with a double celebration: receiving her new nationality and headlining the Sunny Hill Festival, held from July 1 to August 3 in Kosovo—a festival she also organizes. “Got my 🇽🇰 citizenship the night before and then partied hard at at Sunny Hill Festival,” she shared on social media.

The singer was also seen on stage alongside her father, Dukagjin Lipa—co-organizer and owner of the festival—enjoying the event and sharing moments with other stars, including fellow headliner Shawn Mendes.

Through events like Sunny Hill, the festival continues to highlight the cultural richness of Kosovo, while Dua Lipa proudly carries her roots as far as her music can reach.
