Choi Wheesung, Renowned K-Pop Artist, Found Dead at 43

The artist was found in his apartment in the Gwangjin district of Seoul

Choi Wheesung, one of the most iconic vocalists in K-pop, has passed away at the age of 43, leaving a huge void in the music world. His sudden death has left fans and colleagues in shock, raising many questions about what happened in his final hours.

Hits like ‘Can’t You’ (2002), ‘Insomnia’ (2009), ‘Even Though of Marriage’ (2010), and ‘Heartsore Story’ (2011) are just a few of the tracks that helped Wheesung win over the public. Alongside his solo career, he also worked as a producer and composer.

Scandals and Legal Issues

However, his career wasn’t without its challenges. In 2020, Wheesung was accused of abusing propofol, an anesthetic that has been at the center of several controversies in South Korea due to its misuse. It was later revealed that he had also used etomidate, another drug with similar effects.

In 2021, a court found him guilty of purchasing 12 prescriptions for propofol between September and November 2019, spending over 6.5 million won—around $4,468. He was sentenced to one year in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he avoided jail time.

Despite facing ups and downs, Wheesung remained active in music. In fact, he had a concert scheduled with KCM on March 15 in Daegu. Just days before his passing, he posted a message on social media that now carries a different meaning: “The diet is over. See you on March 15.” For many, it seemed like just another update, but now his followers see it as his final goodbye.

His agency, Tajoy Entertainment, released a statement offering their condolences: “We extend our deepest sympathy and sorrow as we share this heartbreaking news with the fans who have supported him with unwavering love over the years.”

Rest in peace, Wheesung.
