The 2025 BRIT Awards are fast approaching, and the British music industry has started revealing some of the winners in its biggest categories. After Sabrina Carpenter was named Global Phenomenon of the Year, it was time to crown the British Songwriter of the Year. While many expected Dua Lipa to take the title, the honor went to Charli XCX instead.

It’s not a total surprise—the Cambridge-born artist has had an incredible year with her album Brat, which has been praised by both critics and fans. With this record, she’s a strong contender to be one of the night’s biggest winners.

Charli XCX: From Early Beginnings to BRIT Award Winner

Born Charlotte Emma Aitchison on August 2, 1992, in Cambridge, England, Charli XCX showed a passion for music from an early age. She released her first independent album, 14, in 2008, but it was with her major-label debut, True Romance (2013) that she started gaining real industry recognition.

Charli XCX’s big break on the international stage came with her third album, Sucker (2014), which included hits like ‘Boom Clap’ and ‘Break the Rules.’ Since then, she has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Iggy Azalea on ‘Fancy’ and Icona Pop on ‘I Love It.’ Her distinctive sound and ability to mix different styles have made her a key figure in modern pop music.

In 2020, Charli released ‘How I’m Feeling Now,’ an album recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown, which received praise for its creativity and personal touch. But it was with Brat (2024) that she reached a whole new level of success. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and hit No. 1 in the UK, confirming her place as one of the most influential artists of her generation.

Brit Awards 2025

Alongside Charli XCX’s big win, the 2025 Brit Awards have revealed another major honoree: Sabrina Carpenter. The American pop star will receive the Global Success Award, which recognizes artists who have made a significant impact worldwide. Past winners include One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Adele, and Sam Smith.

Sabrina, known for hits like ‘Please Please Please’ and ‘Espresso,’ has had an amazing year, topping charts around the world. With this award, she becomes the first international artist to receive the honor, marking another milestone in her skyrocketing career.

The Rising Star Award this year goes to Myles Smith, a singer-songwriter from Luton who has been gaining attention for his unique sound and emotional storytelling. His single ‘Stargazing’ has become a global hit, while his EP You Promised A Lifetime has been widely praised by critics. Myles is also the first male artist to win this award since Sam Fender in 2019, setting him up for an exciting future in music.

With these three winners already confirmed, the 2025 Brit Awards are shaping up to be a night to remember. The ceremony takes place on March 1 at the O2 Arena in London.
