Britney Spears is back in the spotlight, but not for anything related to her music. On May 22, the pop icon sparked controversy after lighting a cigarette during a commercial flight, prompting the crew to intervene. According to People magazine, the incident led to a warning from airport authorities due to her behavior on board.
The event quickly drew attention on social media and in international press — until Britney herself spoke out. In a post on Instagram, she shared her side of the story, mixing humor, an apology, and some pointed comments about the flight crew.
“It’s actually incredibly funny” she wrote at the start of her message. Britney explained that she thought smoking was allowed on the plane because of the way the cupholders were designed. She also mentioned it was her first time drinking vodka, which left her feeling “so clear and smart,” with an intense urge to smoke. “My friend put it in my mouth and lit it up for me so I was like OH SO THIS IS A PLANE WHERE YOU CAN SMOKE!” she added with sarcasm.

While she did apologize to anyone who might have been offended, Britney criticized one of the flight attendants, saying she overreacted. “The flight attendant called officials because I smoked a cigarette !!! And embarrass me which jeez I thought was kinda much,” Spears wrote, adding that the attendant had been unfriendly from the start of the flight.
The singer also shared that it was her first time at an international airport, and while she appreciated the kind treatment from the officers, her experience on the flight itself wasn’t a positive one. “Nobody was on the plane for first 20 minutes and she wouldn’t let me get out of my seat I wanted to stand up […] I didn’t like the way she put the seatbelt on me and invaded my space,” she said.

This incident adds to a growing list of non-music-related moments that have kept Britney in the media spotlight. While she’s been away from the stage, she hasn’t been far from public attention. At this time, no formal penalties have been announced regarding her behavior on the flight.
