Why Did Manuel Turizo Name His Latest Album ‘201’?

Manuel Turizo, one of Colombia’s biggest music stars who’s gotten people dancing worldwide, is ready to start a new chapter in his musical career. On November 22, he dropped his fourth studio album, 201. Of course, his new songs are already becoming fan favorites.

The album features 12 tracks, where Turizo mixes ‘new sounds without losing the essence of the music that made him.’ “This album reflects where I am in my life, both personally and artistically,” he says. You might be curious about the meaning behind the numbers. They’re not random—each one holds special significance for him.

The title honors the apartment number where he lived during his childhood in Montería, Colombia. Turizo hasn’t forgotten his roots or the people who helped him become one of the biggest names in global urban music. His brother, Julián, has also been involved in the creative process, along with Edgar Barrera, Slow Mike, and Botlok.

The 12 tracks on 201 bring a mix of urban sounds with Latin tropical influences and fresh, innovative rhythms. The album features collaborations we’re already familiar with, like ‘Qué Pecao0 with Kapo, ‘Mamasota’ with Yandel, ‘Bahamas’ with Saiko, and ‘De Lunes A Lunes’ with Grupo Frontera. There’s also vallenato in ‘La Ex De Mi Amigo’ with Elder Dayán Díaz and electronic beats from Alok in ‘Yo No Me Vuelvo A Enamorar’.

The release of 201 comes at a time when Manuel Turizo is on a roll. Not only did his song La Bachata become the most-streamed Latin solo song in Spotify’s history in 2022, but he also earned platinum certification in the U.S. and 26 Platinum Latin records. On top of that, he won the award for Best Latin Artist in Concert at the LOS40 Music Awards Santander 2024.
