Madonna has always stood out for breaking boundaries and leaving no one indifferent, but it seems she has found a Latina successor: none other than Tokischa Altagracia Peralta Juárez, a.k.a. Tokischa, the Dominican rapper who has taken over the urban genre since collaborating with Rosalía on the magnetic track «Linda.»
Tokischa has many things in common with Madonna. In addition to great innovative potential, her performative aspect focuses heavily on unabashed sexuality and anything related to liberation. Perhaps this is how she has conquered the queen of pop, who never misses an opportunity to express her love for the artist, as she did this week at the Celebration Tour during its stop at Madison Square Garden in New York.
But where did this powerful artist come from? In fact, Tokischa, who is only 27 years old, grew up in a very humble environment east of Santo Domingo. She studied fine arts and dramaturgy, dedicating herself to modeling from the age of 16. However, at that age, she also fell into prostitution.
«We are all prostitutes of the system. I chose to sell sex rather than sell my time to an office. A thousand times, if I had to choose again, I would. I had to spend the whole day in an office taking calls, being insulted by FedEx clients who hadn’t received their packages. I had no money or time, no way to study, so a thousand times I preferred prostitution. I tried selling marijuana, but it didn’t work,» she revealed in an interview with El País.
Tokischa has established herself as a star in the urban genre thanks to multiple hits like «Estilazo» (with Marshmello) or «Delincuente» with Anuel AA and Ñengo Flow. She also has her own collaboration with Madonna, titled «Hung Up On Tokischa,» which has accumulated almost 7 million views on YouTube, featuring a display of affection between both artists.
In the United States, we recently had the opportunity to enjoy Tokischa at the Calibash festival, one of the many Latino festivals taking place in our country in 2024.
And you, were you already familiar with Tokischa?
