Argentina has always been a country where music plays a big role. Afew years ago, the rock scene was dominant and set the standard for many artists. Andrés Calamaro, Fito Páez, Spinetta, Gustavo Cerati, and Charly García were like gods in the country. Nowadays, the urban scene has been steadily gaining ground, becoming the genre that introduces the most names to international music. El Quinto Escalón, a rap battle competition in Argentina, was a training ground for many artists who now fill stadiums.

Some of the talents from this country include Bizarrap, with his successful sessions that have revitalized artists like Shakira and discovered new talents like fellow Argentine Milo J. Not to mention Nicki Nicole, the first Argentine artist invited to Jimmy Fallon’s show, showing her influence not only in Argentina but also in the United States.

The list of Argentine urban artists making it big around the world is growing, with names like Duki, Trueno, Tiago PZK, Lit Killah, Khea, and many others. While the rock scene was mostly male-dominated, the urban scene is more balanced. Besides Nicki Nicole, artists like María Becerra, Emilia Mernes, Cazzu, Tini, Nathy Peluso, and La Joaqui are making a big impact.

However, even though the emerging urban scene is taking the world by storm, it hasn’t yet translated into big money. Forbes magazine recently ranked the highest-paid Argentine artists, and local media picked up on it. Interestingly, no urban artist made it into the top 10.
