Why would someone willingly return to a deadly competition where only one person survives—and walks away with a fortune? The answer is simple: revenge.

The hit Korean series Squid Game, which shocked the world back in 2021, returned on December 26 with a brand-new season. As gripping and intense as the first, it still has plenty of surprises in store. This time, we follow Seong Gi-hun, player 456 and the previous winner, as he heads back to the island where it all began.

Interview With De Estreno

After all, who doesn’t love money—sometimes even more than their own life? Ambition can cloud anyone’s judgment. At De Estreno, we had the chance to speak with Lee Jung Jae, who plays player 456 in Netflix’s Squid Game, about the deeper questions he faced while stepping back into this role.

“I remember filming the first season during a time when the economy was struggling, and so many people were dealing with financial hardships. It was the same in Korea. It made me think—how far would you go to survive? What choices would you be willing to make? Would you sacrifice yourself to provide for your family? How much could you endure? These questions were always on my mind. And now, in this highly competitive world, I wonder—how far would someone go, and how ruthless would they be willing to get, just to win?”

Lee Jung Jae, the star of Squid Game, opened up about how the intense competition left a lasting impact on his character.

“Gi-hun’s journey brought out every side of human nature. At times, he had to look away as others around him died to keep going. But there were also moments when the kindness inside him made him want to help others, even when he was struggling to survive. As the game went on, though, his focus on winning became so intense that he was even willing to kill if it meant staying alive.”

Lee Jung Jae, the lead in Netflix’s Squid Game, also revealed which game he thought was the toughest. “I think it was the dalgona game, the honeycomb challenge.”
