Shakira’s Return to Barranquilla: Why Is This Concert So Special?

The Colombian artist included her hometown in her 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' Latin American Tour

This past Wednesday, October 2nd, Shakira excited her Latin American fans by announcing new dates for her upcoming ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore)’ tour, which includes stops in countries like Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and, of course, Colombia.

One city and date, in particular, got everyone talking: Barranquilla, her hometown, where she’ll be performing on February 21, 2025. It’s a big deal because it’s been almost 20 years since she included it in her world tours. The last time Shakira brought a tour to Barranquilla was back in November 2006 with the Fijación Oral tour. Since then, she’s skipped her hometown on world tours like Sale el Sol and El Dorado, only performing in Bogotá for those.

Even though Shakira made a brief appearance at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Central American Games in Barranquilla, she hadn’t returned for a full tour. So when she announced her comeback to ‘La Arenosa’ (a nickname for the city), it sparked a lot of excitement and anticipation among locals.

Why did Shakira Change the Date of Her Concert in Barranquilla?

Her return to her hometown wasn’t the only thing that caused a buzz—it was the date, too. February 21, 2025, had already been set for one of Barranquilla’s biggest pre-carnival events: La Guacherna. Since Barranquilla’s carnival is one of the most important in South America, Shakira’s concert on the same day left many locals torn—whether to attend the carnival event or her concert.

On October 4, Shakira announced she would move her concert to February 20. “I want to celebrate La Guacherna with my people, so I’ve asked the organizers to move my Barranquilla concert to February 20. So, the people of La Arenosa will get plenty of Shakira—performing in my hometown after many years and celebrating La Guacherna together.”
