Last Friday, November 8,  ‘+57’ was released—a collaboration featuring some of Colombia’s biggest music stars right now. Karol G, Maluma, J Balvin, Feid, DFZM, Ryan Castro, Blessd, and Ovy On The Drums joined forces on a track that hasn’t stopped generating buzz. And it’s not just because of the star-studded lineup; the song has sparked controversy on multiple fronts.

The first controversy centers on the lyrics. At one point, the song says, «una mamasita desde los fourteen» («a hottie since fourteen»), a phrase that has raised a lot of eyebrows.

The second issue comes from the lack of female artists featured in the collaboration. Only Karol G appears, and other artists, like Colombian star Farina, have criticized this choice. «That’s a question Karol G needs to answer; I assume it’s her song. From what I see, it seems like there’s no intention to give any other Colombian female artist exposure in urban music,» Farina said on Saturday, November 9, in an interview with Telemundo.

Karol G’s Response

Now, Karol has responded to these controversies in an official statement shared on her social media. «I’m always grateful to those who follow and support me, those who know my project, the intentions of my work, and the causes close to my heart—those that drive me, inspire me, and for which I work day by day with love and responsibility. I care about my people, and as a person, I look for ways to involve myself in projects where I can extend my blessings and positively impact the lives of many,» the artist began.

Karol G is aware that, as a public figure, she’s open to public opinion. Despite this, she explains that she feels frustrated at the moment:

«I feel very frustrated with the misinformation that’s been spread, especially the fake posts supposedly made by me and then deleted on Twitter, which I haven’t used in over six months. In this case, unfortunately, the song’s lyrics were taken out of context. My intention was to celebrate the union of artists and make my people dance… None of the words in the song were meant in the way they’ve been interpreted, nor was it intended from that perspective. But I listen, I take responsibility, and I realize I still have a lot to learn. I feel deeply affected and apologize sincerely.”

Karol G also took the opportunity to thank her +57 collaborators for being part of the project: «I hold close to my heart the good energy we all shared that day.»
