On May 17th, Álvaro Díaz dropped his second studio album, SAYONARA, which explores his own experiences with heartbreak. From the 20 tracks on the album, he chose «GATITAS SANDUNGUERAS, VOL. 1,» his collaboration with Feid, as the lead single. Now, there’s a music video for the track that nods to American culture from the 90s.
Directed by Waiv and Gian, the music video for «GATITAS SANDUNGUERAS, VOL. 1,»gives a playful nod to the sensationalist news portal TMZ, cleverly renamed ‘A&F.com’ (Álvaro and Feid), and also to typical infomercials. There’s also a clear homage to a classic Quentin Tarantino film, Reservoir Dogs; in this case, both artists (and their crew) are portrayed as Reservoir Neas.
Another notable aspect portrayed in this nostalgic reggaeton hit is La Fiebre de Puerto Rico, a significant movement revolving around motor culture, tuning, and speed in the Puerto Rican scene. This includes the distinct VHS aesthetic commonly seen in music videos from that era, as well as references to video games from that time period.
This marks the fifth time Álvarito and Ferxxo have collaborated, following their work on tracks like «A Mi También,» «Llori Pari» (both with Tainy), «Otra vez,» and «CU U U U UX».
In Álvaro’s recent interview with LOS40 Spain, he explained to our colleague Cintia León that «GATITAS SANDUNGUERAS, VOL. 1» came about authentically. He mentioned, “Ferxxo and I are big fans of a specific era of reggaeton. There’s a sound and vibe from that time that we really love and find nostalgic. That’s why we chose to include a song from that era in SAYONARA.”
