The telenovela was a hit not just in Colombia but worldwide. Translated into dozens of languages, it aired in more than 180 countries and was remade more than 20 times. Including the American adaptation, Ugly Betty with America Ferrera. The original series ran for 169 episodes, from 1999 to 2001. It captivated viewers with its unusual storyline, comic relief, and a powerful message about the value of inner beauty.

The Return of Betty, la Fea & Fan Event at LOS40

When news of the telenovela’s comeback after so long broke, it made headlines. Due to its lasting influence over the years, even before social media, LOS40 organized a Fan Event. Gaby Cam had the honor of hosting Ana María Orozco, who plays Betty, and Jorge Enrique Abello, who portrays Don Armando, at the LOS40 studios.

At this Fan Event, a touching moment was highlighted with Mexican musical comedy singer and actress Lolita Cortés (special guest). She shared how in 2005, watching the telenovela and the characters ‘Betty’ and ‘Don Armando Medoza’ helped her through her battle with cancer diagnosed in 2023, providing the solace she needed during that challenging period. This is just one example of the impact this show has had on the lives of people who cherish it.

Yo soy Betty, la fea

The telenovela first aired in 1999 on RCN Television in Colombia. The story centered on Betty, an economist who, despite her academic credentials, struggled to find employment due to her perceived lack of physical beauty. Landing a job at a fashion house, Ecomoda, Betty’s appearance –hidden behind large glasses, a fringe, and braces–, was often the target of jokes. Yet, Betty won hearts with her kindness, tenacity and smarts.

What Was the Secret of its Success?

Firstly, there was the captivating and relatable character of Betty, portrayed brilliantly by actress Ana María Orozco. Audiences empathized with Betty’s struggles and cheered for her triumphs. The series also taught a significant lesson that attractiveness is more than physical. Moreover, it portrayed the harsh reality of the fashion industry, making it a pioneering telenovela in addressing such themes.

The cast was filled with memorable characters, each with their distinct peculiarities also played a crucial role. Their interactions added a layer of realism and humor, making the series a perfect blend of comedy and drama.
