Elections results stir controversy

Republican candidate Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. presidential election, becoming the 47th president of the United States after defeating Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.

As of Wednesday, November 6, results indicate Trump has improved on his 2020 performance across several counties, with some exceptions. He secured victories in key battleground states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, ensuring the 270 Electoral College votes needed.

“We overcame obstacles no one thought possible,” Trump stated in one of his early speeches as vote counting wrapped up, adding that he would take office with an “unprecedented and powerful mandate.”

This message likely doesn’t sit well with many celebrities, who mostly supported Kamala Harris. While some artists like Anuel AA, Justin Quiles, and Nicky Jam publicly backed Trump, the majority called for votes for the Democratic Party, including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and JLo, among many others.

Most celebrities haven’t yet commented on the results, but a few have. Cardi B, during the vote count, posted on Instagram, “I hate y’all bad,” hinting at Trump’s victory. She also shared a meme on her social media showing two women trying on wigs, though it’s unclear what she intended to convey.

Rihanna has responded to some of her critics on Instagram, posting a humorous video captioned: “POV: me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #votecauseicant.” As a Barbadian, Rihanna isn’t a U.S. citizen, though her children, born in the U.S., are. In response to comments on her post, she wrote: “Lol, donkey of the day goes to…”, “I LOVE my Bajan passport. I came here to work and pay taxes! You’re welcome,” and “shut up, Karen.”

Actress Christina Applegate, who had openly supported Harris, expressed strong disappointment with the outcome. “Please unfollow me if you voted against female rights. Against disability rights. Yeah, that. Unfollow me because what you did is unreal. Don’t want followers like this. So yeah. Done,” she posted on social media.

Elon Musk, the billionaire and owner of X, who also provided financial support for Trump’s campaign, shared his thoughts on the platform: “The people of America gave @realdonaldtrump a crystal clear mandate for change tonight,” implying a promising future ahead.

One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush stated: “Well done, America, handing more power to the MAGA crowd. I wonder how many people are seeing this and STILL thinking, ‘At least he’s not a Black woman!’ quietly to themselves tonight. My heart is broken.”

TV personality Andy Cohen, referring to Trump’s history of unfounded election fraud claims, asked: “So, the election ISN’T rigged???”

Author Stephen King also weighed in: “There’s a sign you can see in many shops that sell beautiful but fragile items: LOVELY TO LOOK AT, DELIGHTFUL TO HOLD, BUT ONCE YOU BREAK IT, THEN IT’S SOLD. You can say the same about democracy.”
