The Heartwarming Goodbye Gesture from Harry Potter Fans to Michael Gambon

This Potterhead tradition originated in the movie 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'

September 29th was a sad day for the magical community and Harry Potter fans, as the actor, Michael Gambon, who portrayed Albus Dumbledore from the third film (The Prisoner of Azkaban, directed by Alfonso Cuarón) in the acclaimed saga, passed away from pneumonia on September 28th, at the age of 82.

Potterheads are a close-knit community known for their loyalty. For this reason, fans and guests at Universal Orlando Resort unofficially gathered to make an emotional farewell gesture in front of the Hogwarts castle: they raised their wands (and some umbrellas) pointing to the sky to honor the actor.

The tradition of raising wands in tribute originated in ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ when the Hogwarts students raise their wands in honor (SPOILER) the passing of their headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Over time, it has evolved into an unofficial tradition within the ‘Harry Potter’ fan community to pay their respects when a member of the beloved franchise’s cast departs.

Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.”

This touching custom has been observed on several occasions, including in 2022 and 2016, when the news of the passing of actors Robbie Coltrane, renowned for his portrayal of Hagrid, and Alan Rickman, famous for his role as Severus Snape, deeply saddened fans.

Harry Potter Cast Bids Farewell to Michael Gambon

Meanwhile, his former co-stars from the series, including Daniel Radcliffe, J.K. Rowling, and others, posted messages for him across various publications.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter)

The actor wrote in a statement to Variety: “With the loss of Michael Gambon the world just became considerably less fun. Michael Gambon was one of the most brilliant, effortless actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with, but despite his immense talent, the thing I will remember most about him is how much fun he had doing his job.”

Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley)

So sad to hear about Michael. He brought so much warmth and mischief to every day on set. He captivated me as a kid and became a personal role model of mine for finding the fun and eccentricities in life. Sending all my love to his family, Rupert.”

James Phelps (Fred Weasley)
