Thanks to an invitation from Nintendo, we traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for an exclusive hands-on experience with the eagerly anticipated Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Our journey took us to the enormous booth within the bustling halls of the Brasil Game Show, one of the largest video game expos on the continent. During this opportunity, we had the privilege of spending roughly 30 minutes immersed in the world of this new 2D platformer, which is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 20th.

Renewed Gameplay

Staying true to the classic gameplay style of the series, the controls feature familiar jump, run, and shoot buttons, along with the iconic mechanics of entering pipes and smashing blocks elements that have been integral to the Mario experience. However, Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduces us to exciting new worlds full with challenges. The spotlight is on the Wonder Flowers, which play a central role. They grant players the ability to transform into various forms, each with its unique abilities, aiding in overcoming the array of enemies and obstacles that await in each level. In this fresh rendition featuring the beloved plumber and his friends as the main characters, we can morph into a spiked ball, the well-known Mario-elephant showcased in trailers, and wield classic powers such as fireballs.

One noteworthy addition to the gameplay is that the choice of power-ups or costumes can influence access to specific parts of the level. Moreover, a novel feature involves the use of badges, which bestow additional abilities upon our characters. For example, we experimented with a badge that allowed us to leap higher and, to some extent, hover. This alteration fundamentally transforms the game’s formula and proves invaluable in conquering each of the game’s challenging levels. As is customary, the title also integrates mini-games, offering opportunities to acquire more coins and valuable items to aid our progression through the game’s diverse worlds.

Multiplayer Extravaganza

Among the standout features of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is its multiplayer mode, accommodating up to 4 players simultaneously. With a plethora of character choices, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Light Blue Yoshi, and Caco Gazapo, the multiplayer experience promises variety and excitement. It’s worth highlighting that both Yoshi and Gazapo are particularly beginner-friendly, as they are impervious to damage.

Continuity in Vibrant Graphics

Visually, this installment retains the vibrant color palette characteristic of the series, while introducing an abundance of animations that imbue the game with a newfound liveliness and a subtle sense of three-dimensionality. Players will observe instances where Mario the elephant momentarily struggles when entering pipes or how he effortlessly snatches his hat while navigating them an ingenious detail that adds to the immersion.

Familiar Sounds and a Touch of Localization

The game’s soundtrack and sound effects maintain the familiar and iconic auditory experience. It’s important to note that the developers have put significant effort into localization, ensuring that players worldwide will appreciate the nuances of the game’s audio. In conclusion, Super Mario Bros. Wonder remains true to its beloved roots while introducing subtle yet impactful changes to its 2D mechanics. The countdown to the official release of this highly anticipated title is nearly over, and fans can hardly contain their excitement.
