It goes without saying that Shakira is one of the most important figures in Latin music since she dazzled the whole world with her iconic «Laundry Servide» (2001). However, in the past year, the diva from Barranquilla has made a historic comeback that only a pop icon like her can achieve. Amidst a highly publicized separation, she channeled her emotions through music, healing her wounds with hit after hit.
Among all these songs, there’s one that stands out: the BZRP Music Sessions #53 with Argentine star producer Bizarrap. It has become a breakup anthem deeply ingrained in the collective imagination of people. The release took place six months ago and was a massive hit, breaking all records and becoming the talk of the town due to the messages Shakira dedicated to her former partner and father of her children, Spanish former soccer player Gerard Piqué.
Now, with some time having passed, Shakira granted an interview to Mexican journalist Alejandra Espinoza, where she talked about what it meant for her to release that song with Bizarrap. First of all, the singer never thought it would become as iconic as it did. «I never thought it would be so emblematic, I didn’t imagine that,» the artist states.

In Shakira’s song with Bizarrap, there are no hidden messages; they’re all crystal clear. That’s why her team advised her, at one point, not to release it. «Many people on my team told me, ‘No, you’re not going to release that song. What are you thinking? You have to change the lyrics,'» the artist explains in the interview.
«I’m not a United Nations official or a public servant; I’m an artist, and I really have to express what I feel and how I feel it. And that freedom of expression is non-negotiable,» she declared.
Furthermore, in the same interview, Shakira talked about the good moment she’s going through. Although, as she acknowledges, success is subjective to her.
«For me, success is simply doing what you want and what you like, with the freedom to express your feelings and emotions. And these songs that I’ve been writing and sharing with people are a reflection of my inner world,» she states.
For now, let’s continue enjoying her songs. The latest one? «Copa Vacía» with Manuel Turizo. Another success in Shakira’s most overwhelming and triumphant year.
