Rosalía has been one of the major highlights of the 2023 Latin Grammys with her opening performance, interpreting a legendary flamenco ballad from Spain: «Se Nos Rompió el Amor,» originally performed by the Andalusian folk singer Rocío Jurado. Her stage appearance was filled with symbolism and hidden messages, signaling a shift away from everything we had seen in the previous months and officially concluding her «Motomami» era to return to a darkness and mysticism reminiscent of «Los Ángeles.»
«Se Nos Rompió el Amor» tells the story of the end of a romantic relationship, marked by a fading sexual passion that becomes the catalyst for the breakup. The ballad was composed by the Jerez-born songwriter Manuel Alejandro in 1985 for Jurado’s album «Paloma Brava,» later reaching number one in sales in Spain, Chile, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Venezuela, and landing in the top ten in Argentina, Peru, Honduras, Mexico, and Colombia.
Se nos rompió el amor
De tanto usarlo
De tanto loco abrazo
Sin medidas
De darnos por completo
A cada paso
Se nos quedó en las manos
Un buen díaSe nos rompió el amor
Qué tan grandioso
Jamás pudo existir
Tanta belleza
Las cosas tan hermosas
Duran pocoJamas duró una flor
Dos primaveras
Me alimenté de ti
Por mucho tiempo
Nos devoramos vivos
Como fierasJamás pensamos nunca en el invierno
Pero el invierno llega
Aunque no quieras
Y una mañana gris
Al abrazarnos
Sentimos un crujido
Frío y seco
Cerramos nuestros ojos y pensamosSe nos rompió el amor
De tanto usarlo
Our love broke
From using it so much
From so many crazy embraces
Without restraint
From giving ourselves completely
At every step
One day, it slipped through our hands
Our love brokeHow magnificent it was
It could never have existed
So much beauty
Beautiful things
Don’t last longA flower never lasted
Two springs
I fed on you
For a long time
We devoured each other alive
Like beastsWe never thought about winter
But winter comes
Whether you want it or not
And one gray morning
As we embraced
We felt a crack
Cold and dry
We closed our eyes and thoughtOur love broke
From using it so much
