Musically speaking, if anything took away the pandemic in 2020, it was the opportunity to enjoy ‘Tusa’ on any club night. Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s song has become over the years one of the most played female collaborations in history, with more than 1.3 billion listens on Spotify and 1.4 billion plays on Youtube. Figures within reach of very few.

Now we’ve also learned more details of how this collab between the two icons came about and why they have never sung it together live.

How ‘Tusa’ was Created

It all started a few hours ago, when a fan account of Karol G shared on Twitter a fragment of her interview for Elle USA, where she explained how special it had been to be able to make this collaboration.

As a response, Nicki explained how she received Tusa’s proposal: «The thing is: Karol sent me another song first and I asked her to send something else. She didn’t want to because she said that reggaeton was what was popping at the time. But she still sent a new song. When I heard ‘Tusa’ I fell in love. I think I was pregnant. I was dancing with my husband non-stop in the backyard […] The song made us feel so happy. That’s how I knew it was the one».

The Reason Why Nicki Minaj Hasn’t Ever Perfomed ‘Tusa’ Live

Nicki’s words soon spread across Twitter with thousands of likes and retweets, provoking hundreds of comments in just a few hours. Among these comments, one fan responded directly to Nicki Minaj asking for a live performance of the song by both of them, talking about a pending account especially for the Latin fan community. ‘Tusa’ is one of the key songs in Karol G’s repertoire in any of her concerts, but we have never been able to hear them singing it together.

The reason? Nicki Minaj explained it in another tweet: «To be fair, Karol asked me to perform it with her at two different award shows, if I recall correctly. By that time, however, I I had gotten preggers tho & I was still keeping it a secret. I hated having to pass up on it but papa was growing in mama tummy. Lo siento por mis fans Latinos», she wrote.

Will we ever get a chance to see them on stage together? Only time will tell.
