Tony Bennett’s life has undoubtedly been one of the most interesting. He fought in World War II, and although music, his great passion, accompanied him from the age of 10, he decided to dedicate himself to it after this stage of his life. It was then that he released the anthem «Because Of You,» coinciding with his signing to Columbia Records. The 1950s were crucial in contextualizing his success.

Over time, Tony’s talent reached ever greater heights. Artists like Elton John, Amy Winehouse, John Mayer, and Lady Gaga, among others, were more excited than ever to work with the ballad and jazz legend, considering it an honor to collaborate with this figure who made history internationally.

Many believed there was a rivalry between Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. Despite sharing musical styles, they always appeared as cordial and polite as they were, demonstrating that their passion for music was above all. In fact, they sang the classic «New York, New York» together in a duet in 1994.

A Tough Blow

Tony’s life changed completely in 2021 after announcing that he had Alzheimer’s. This led him to make the decision to step away from the stage at the age of 95, an heroic age for anyone who knows the fact.  “There won’t be any additional concerts. This was a hard decision for us to make, as he is a capable performer. This is, however, doctors’ orders. His continued health is the most important part of this, and when we heard the doctors — when Tony’s wife, Susan heard them — she said, ‘Absolutely not,'» declared his son and representative in a statement to Variety magazine.

On this July 21, the world listens to his deep voice more strongly than ever, continuing to showcase our sensuality with classics that have made history in jazz and, ultimately, in music.

Rest in peace, Tony Bennett.
