Kim Petras Drops Surprise Album: Problématique

On Monday, September 18, Kim Petras surprise-released the musical project that was initially set to be her debut album: Problématique.

The journey to this album, in a way, pays homage to its title ‘Problematique,’ as it indeed had a challenging process. In 2021, Petras signed with the major label Republic Records and unveiled her album, originally intended to be her first full-length release. However, it was ultimately shelved and partially leaked. Naturally, this was a significant disappointment not only for Petras’ fans but also for Petras herself, as they had eagerly anticipated the album’s release.

     It was shocking when I found out part of the album leaked –at the time– that it wasn’t ever going to come out, especially as I poured so much of myself into it. I was heartbroken but, at the same time, it was really exciting to see my fans listening to the tracks and loving them” –Petras said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Feed The Beast

Instead, Feed The Beast became her debut album, released in June, and featuring a collection of 15 expertly crafted pop tracks. The album transcended her previous musical styles by drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and capturing the essence of pop music.

The album symbolizes Kim’s dedication to her inner self, reimagining a modern twist on the classic Greek tale where a princess faced a sacrificial offering to a beast. However, unlike the original story, Kim is determined to rescue herself through a body of work heavily influenced by the euphoric Eurodance hits that resonated with her during her formative years.

Problématique

The 10-track LP draws inspiration from French house music and includes songs like «Born Again,» «Something About U,» «Dirty Things,» and «All She Wants,» featuring a collab with Paris Hilton. All of these tracks were co-produced by a trio consisting of Dr. Luke, Aaron Joseph, and Vaughn Oliver.

According to the initial tracklist shared by Joseph in 2021, the original version of Problématique contained several songs that eventually found their way onto her album Feed the Beast. Some of these crossover tracks include «Revelations,» «Coconuts,» and «Hit It From the Back.» Notably, the updated LP also omits what would have been its lead single, «Future Starts Now.»
