Within the vast universe of the music industry, it’s common for our ears to become familiar with the same artist names repeatedly.
However, there’s an endless number of talents who work tirelessly every day to offer us a musical proposal full of fresh and genuine emotions. Among these figures, the Spanish artist Berta Garrido stands out.
At just 24 years old, Berta distinguishes herself not only as a captivating and unique voice but also as a talented composer and producer. Her musical work challenges conventions and refuses to be confined to a single genre.
From the beginning, Garrido has explored the entire urban spectrum, carving her path through genres such as R&B, trap, hip-hop, indie, dancehall, and Lo-fi.
Berta debuted her solo career with the release of «Techo» (Ceiling). Subsequently, she released two EPs: Epifanías (Epiphanies) in 2018 and Incandescente (Incandescent) in 2019.
Epifanías, as the word’s meaning implies, is an unexpected revelation that can arise when considering a situation, problem, or concept in a new way, leading to a deeper understanding of it. This musical project delves into experiences shaped by this very word, infusing rhythms influenced by Hip Hop and Lo-fi, while the lyrics alternate between Spanish and English.
On the other hand, the second EP, Incandescente, emerges as a social critique where Berta Garrido expresses her perspective on feminism and its reflection in society. Unlike her previous work, this ventures into sonic paths that goes from Trap to dancehall, while still intertwining a bilingual narrative with lyrics in both Spanish and English.
Alongside her EPs, Berta has released a series of singles that solidify her presence in the music scene. These include collabs like «No renta» with Wasp, «Cara triste» (Sad Face) with Remionthebeat, «My Gurlz» with Tony Lenz –all Barcelona-based producers.
Subsequently, noticing growth and maturity in Berta’s music, are the songs «Flores» (Flowers) with Fastboo, «Plantada» (Planted) with Bengro, «YSMV?» with producer and singer Enry-k, or «Rojo Amor» (Red Love) with producer and rapper Gravy.
This last song talks about leaving behind all that is superficial, that is objective and lacks emotion. Rojo Amor is confronting life with emotions and feelings on the surface, and it’s a theme that invites us to delve into our own emotional richness and discover our inner colors.
When a beam of sunlight breaks through a thick layer of clouds, it symbolizes that the challenges that characterized a particular phase of life have now evolved into valuable lessons.”
In June of this year, Berta underwent a notable personal metamorphosis by embodying the lessons drawn from a period of depression she experienced a year and a half ago. These lessons found expression in the form of a musical work composed of six songs, giving life to her most recent creation: El Sol Que Pasa Entre Las Nubes (The Sun That Passes Through The Clouds).
Despite the EP being constructed as an ode to sadness, Berta managed to create an experience of danceable sounds with a strong emotional background. However, isn’t that healing? Dancing to those songs that once made us cry; and in this case, turning that sadness into danceable art, blending genres like Bossa nova, jazz, pop, electronic music, uk garage, and trap, among others.
This project was co-produced by Berta, Fast Boo, and Carzé, who also collaborated on the two focus tracks of the EP, «Llorar» (Cry) and «Parte de mí» (Part of Me), which explore an introspective, mature, and liberated artist, but most importantly, an artist who analyzes her past experiences to fall in love again with her present.
This song delves into the experience of feeling fine when one isn’t, and about the sensation of going to a place where tears find no escape.
This song encapsulates nostalgia and growth, presenting an intimate and emotional portrait of the artist through the lens of her own lived history. The music video comes to life through a collection of home videos from her childhood.
This work reminds us of the delicate duality of leaving behind what’s no longer present, while still acknowledging that those memories and experiences continue to be an intrinsic part of who we are.
In a landscape where monotony threatens to take over the music scene, Berta Garrido demonstrates her versatility and ability to blend and experiment with different sonic currents in each project.
Not only in El Sol Que Pasa Entre Las Nubes, but throughout her entire career, she manages to confront her own inner darkness and reconstruct it into a musical experience that encompasses a range of emotions, genres, and experiences.
With each note and production, Berta continues to forge a unique path, reminding us that art knows no pre-established limits and inspiring us to explore beyond the conventional and embrace the richness of musical diversity.
Undoubtedly, we eagerly anticipate the release of her upcoming single «Pecas» (Freckles), which will arrive on September 29th.
