Margot Robbie Wanted Gal Galdot to Play Barbie

Director Greta Gerwing, during the casting process, was looking for ‘Barbie energy’. Margot Robbie, on the other hand, revealed to Vogue that she wasn’t sure she actually owned a Barbie doll, as she wasn’t a huge fan as child. She, growing up on Australia’s Gold Coast, spent a lot of time outside, making mud pies with her cousin (that had a lot of Barbies), playing with trucks and building cubbies.

Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork”said Margot about Gal.

Reviving Ophelia, the Book Behind Some of the Movie Inspiration

The movie’s story is partially based on the best-selling book Reviving Ophelia of 1994. In an interview for Vogue, Greta confessed that she read the book when she was a kid. The book is about the challenges faced by girls during adolescence and the impact of societal pressures on their lives.

My mom would check out books from the library about parenting, and then I would read them… They’re funny and brash and confident, and then they just—stop. How is this journey the same thing that a teenage girl feels? All of a sudden, she thinks, «Oh, I’m not good enough”Greta Gerwing.

The Reason Why Ryan Gosling Accepted the Role

The Canadian actor accepted the leading role due to the influence of his daughter. But also, he loved the script.

Best script I’ve ever read. I walk out in the backyard and, do you know where I found Ken, Jimmy? Face down in the mud next to a squished lemon”, said Gosling of his daughters’ Ken doll. Ryan took a photo of what he found and texted it to Greta saying, “I shall be your Ken, for this story must be told.”
