New Mexico prosecutors have decided to drop the criminal charges against the famous actor Alec Baldwin, who had been accused of two counts of involuntary manslaughter following the tragic incident on the set of the Western movie ‘Rust’ in October 2021, when during a practice session on the set a firearm that the actor was using accidentally discharged, resulting in the death of the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and injuries to its director, Joel Souza

This decision and the new evidences around the case has created a big stir on social media. Alec Baldwin has first reacted with a message of gratitude to his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, and his lawyer, Luke Nikas on his Instagram account. «I owe everything I have to this woman. (and to you, Luke)», he wrote.

The Reason Behind Charges’ Withdrawal

The charges against Alec Balwin were dropped due to the discovery of new evidence by the new prosecutors of the case. An anonymous official stated that it was revealed that the gun Baldwin was using had been modified prior to its delivery to the set, according to the New York Times’ report. This information undermined the prosecution’s initial claim that the gun would not have fired unless Baldwin had pulled the trigger. Along the process, Baldwin has maintained that he never did it.

Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, expressed their satisfaction with the decision to dismiss the case against their client in a statement. They also emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. “We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident», they revealed in a statement.

The investigation was unable to determine how live ammunition got onto the set. Moreover, Dave Halls, the film’s first assistant director, was sentenced to six months of probation on a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon. Next month, a judge in New Mexico will decide whether manslaughter charges against the film’s armorer should move forward.
