Canadian rapper Daystar Peterson, better known in the artistic world as Tory Lanez, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion at a party that took place in 2020.

They both attended a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s mansion in Hollywood Hills that didn’t end well. While sharing a car, they began a heated argument centered around their music careers that escalated and resulted in him shooting and injuring the rapper’s feet when they exited the vehicle, which she didn’t hesitate to report to the authorities.

She had to undergo surgery and spent four days in the hospital before physical therapists allowed her to walk again. During those days, she feared she would never be the same again.

«Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,» she declared to the Los Angeles court in a written statement. «Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.»

Verdict: Guilty

On December 23, after a two-week trial, a jury found him guilty of shooting Megan in the foot back in July 2020, when they left the aforementioned party. Although Lanez had pleaded not guilty, he has been finally convicted on all three counts that the prosecutors had levied against him: firearm-assault, unlawful firearm possession, and careless firearm discharge, all in connection to the shooting.

Prosecutors aimed for a substantial penalty for the rapper, since following the incident, they asserted that Tory Lanez initiated a deliberate effort to demean and further distress the victim, employing «misinformation as a weapon» across social media platforms to manipulate public perception against Megan Thee Stallion. However, the rapper kept affirming publicly that Megan is «someone I still care for dearly to this day».

Thee Stalion was absent from the courtroom during the sentencing; however, she released a written statement that conveyed: «For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.»

At that time, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon stated in a press release that women, especially Black women, are afraid to report crimes such as assault and sexual violence because they are often not believed.

This Tuesday, the sentence has been issued, sentencing him to 10 years in prison. «Sometimes good people do bad things,» stated David Herriford, the presiding judge, «actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.»

Furthermore, he emphasized that the rapper has remained steadfast in her fight «despite physical violence, verbal attacks, and attempts at public humiliation.»

The rapper, who has been in prison since being charged, will appeal the sentence. «There are significant issues we have raised in our motion for a new trial,» stated his lawyer, José Báez.

We will see if being behind bars inspires his upcoming songs, as that is quite common in the rap world.
